Scholars at Risk

Unfortunately, academic freedom is not something we can take for granted everywhere in the world. In some countries, scientists also increasingly face threats to their lives and well-being. Find out here which institutions the University of Freiburg works with to support scholars at risk.

Scholars at Risk
Since February 2017, the University of Freiburg is a member of the international Scholars at Risk network. We are one of more than 400 universities in 39 countries which provides sanctuary and assistance to threatened scholars, both in the form of hosting researchers and by using the extensive resource structures of the network. The contact at the University of Freiburg is the Director of the International Office, Ms Katharina Aly.

Baden-Württemberg Scholar Rescue Fund

In light of the dramatically increasing persecution of scholars worldwide, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts (MWK) has, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, created the Baden-Württemberg Scholar Rescue Fund [in German]. The program intends to provide an opportunity for persecuted scholars to continue their research at a Baden-Württemberg university, independent of their nationality or academic field.
