Student Mobility for Placement (SMP) - Incoming

Are you studying at an institution of higher education in one of the Erasmus+ programme countries and interested in an internship at the University of Freiburg? You will find the information you need to plan and carry out your Erasmus+ internship here.

Requirements

Internship position

Consult the overview of Faculties, Departments, Resources, and Services to begin searching for an appropriate institution for your internship at the University of Freiburg.

If you wish to complete an internship at the University of Freiburg, you must find and apply for a suitable position yourself. The International Office does not arrange internships and cannot assist in the search for an internship.

Internship funding

Obtaining an Erasmus+ internship grant from your home university is a prerequisite for being accepted as an Erasmus+ intern at the University of Freiburg. Your home university must be located in an Erasmus+ programme country and have an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). Your home university will provide you with information about the prerequisites for this grant.

Enrolment

If you wish to complete an internship at the University of Freiburg, you must be enrolled at your home university or be funded through an Erasmus+ internship for recent graduates. You will not additionally be enrolled at the University of Freiburg during your internship.

Entry and residence regulations

Entry and residence regulations apply in accordance with your nationality. As this is an important prerequisite for an internship in Germany, we recommend that you find out about your entry and residence requirements early on. You can learn whether you need a visa and how to apply for one from the German missions in your country.

Supervision of the internship at the University of Freiburg

The internship is supervised in the faculty/institute in which it occurs. Typically you will be assigned a supervisor there who will be your contact as you prepare for and complete the internship. You will discuss the content of your internship as well as the time period and the conclusion of an internship contract with your supervisor.
Supervisors at the faculties and institutes should contact the person named below at the International Office for initial information. Additional information, in particular regarding the internship contract, can be found on the intranet under “Praktikantinnen und Praktikanten”.

Internship contract with the University of Freiburg

The conclusion of an internship contract is an essential prerequisite for a stay as an Erasmus+ intern at the University of Freiburg. The University of Freiburg does not offer paid internships. For legal reasons, an Erasmus+ internship is only possible if it is one of the following two types of internship:

  • A compulsory internship based on a provision under higher education law
  • A voluntary internship of up to 3 months that accompanies a university education, provided such an internship relationship has not previously existed with the University of Freiburg

Please discuss the internship contract with your contact person at your host institution at the University of Freiburg. They will request an internship contract from the human resources department and submit it to you for signature.

Learning Agreement for internatips

Prior to the start of your internship, you will prepare a Learning Agreement at your home university, stipulating the basic parameters and learning objectives of the internship. You will receive the document from your home university.

The Learning Agreement will be signed on behalf of the University of Freiburg by the Erasmus+ departmental coordinator of your faculty/institute. Since the Learning Agreement contains all necessary details and is signed by both the home university, the student and the University of Freiburg, no further internship agreement is needed. The University of Freiburg does not sign bilateral agreements or letters of intent for Erasmus+ interns. If an additional document is necessary, the International Office can issue an internship agreement (Convention de Stage) upon request.

Insurance

As an incoming intern, you are not insured by the University of Freiburg. Therefore, you must have sufficient health, accident, and liability insurance during your stay at the University of Freiburg.

EU citizens are generally covered by health insurance via the European Health Insurance Card. Please ask your health insurance provider about your insurance coverage in Germany. This also applies to questions about health insurance abroad.

Home universities often provide liability and accident insurance for travel and activities during the internship. If this coverage is not sufficient or if you would like more comprehensive protection, you should take out your own liability and accident insurance for the period of your internship. Please contact your insurance provider for more information.

Proof of health, accident and liability insurance must be provided as part of the admission procedure at the University of Freiburg (see required documents).
