Nagoya University (Japan)
About the Partnership
The comprehensive partnership between the University of Freiburg and Nagoya University is based on a university wide cooperation agreement signed in 2014. However, the connection between Freiburg and Nagoya can be traced back to the 1950s, when the economics departments at both universities began working together. Today, the partnership covers a large variety of disciplines ranging from biology, chemistry, medicine and physics to law, economics and the humanities.
Nagoya University is a founding member of the international network Academic Consortium AC21 which represents a large framework for cooperation between Freiburg, Nagoya and other member universities.
Highlights of the Partnership
- Since 2016, Nagoya University and the University of Freiburg jointly fund research activities between the two universities. Administered by the Institutes of Advanced Studies at both universities, four applications for the FRIAS-IAR Joint Project Groups have been selected so far: chemistry and law as well as economics and physics. The seed money allocated to these projects is intended to turn existing and planned activities into a long-term, sustainable and self-supporting cooperation.
- A Joint Doctoral Program in Medicine (PhD) fosters the cooperation in medical sciences, particularly in the field of molecular medicine. Doctoral candidates spend at least one year at the partner university, experience supervision from faculty in Nagoya and Freiburg, and are awarded a joint degree for a successful completion of their PhD studies.
- Together with the University of Strasboug, Nagoya University and the University of Freiburg offer an Interdisciplinary PhD Summer School on a yearly basis which will be held in Freiburg in 2019.
- The Nagoya University European Center in Freiburg provides support for partnership activities in research as well as in learning and teaching.
