Fostering international exchange through digital and hybrid collaboration in learning and teaching: Virtual Exchange/Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP)

Digital and hybrid forms of teaching collaborations can be a starting point for establishing and fostering international mobility and international exchange.

Virtual Exchange // Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Commonly known by the terms Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) or Virtual Exchange, collaborating teaching staff will jointly conceptualize and implement a course in a digital and global context. In particular, they will focus on facilitating and moderating dialogue and interaction among students in an academic (disciplinary or interdisciplinary) course setting – be it over the course of only a few weeks or for an entire degree programme module.

Best practices as well as advising and support for the implementation of COIL / virtual exchange courses are offered by the International Office in cooperation with other departments.

Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP)

A short mobility phase and a virtual component are essential elements of courses that are designed and implemented as Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). At least three European universities from at least three programme countries must be involved. Teachers may also participate in the qualification offer of the E-learning Department (edacticLab) when developing a BIP with Erasmus+ partners.
