Mobility for doctoral candidates (SMS)
There are several options for doctoral candidates to spend time abroad via Erasmus+. Each of these options has specific requirements that must be in line with your plans. Please determine well in advance which of these options is right for you.
Mobility options for doctoral candidates
Erasmus+ student mobility for placement (SMP) for doctoral candidates
Internships abroad, e.g. in the form of a research internship, are particularly suitable for doctoral candidates for the following reasons:
- No exchange agreement is required between the participating institutions.
- Participants select their internship site themselves.
- Internships can be completed at university and non-university institutions (research institutes, companies, non-governmental organizations, etc.).
- Doctoral candidates have the option of completing short (5-30 days) or long (2-12 months) internships.
- Internships in Erasmus+ programme countries and worldwide are generally eligible for funding.
- Doctoral candidates can also complete a graduate internship, which can be applied for while enrolled at the university for the period after graduation.
Requirements/restrictions:
- You must be enrolled at the University of Freiburg.
- For internships, you will receive an internship contract and will generally not be enrolled at your host institution, even if your host institution is a university or other higher education institution. As an intern/employee, you are not connected to the services (student status, housing service, cafeteria, etc.) of the university/higher education institution.
- Summer schools and other similar formats are not considered internships.
- Academic conferences and workshops are not eligible for funding.
You can apply for funding for an Erasmus+ (research) internship via KOOR – Erasmus Services BW. On the following page, you’ll find further information on the application process as well as the link to the KOOR mobility platform Placement Online.
Erasmus+ student mobility for studies (SMS) for doctoral candidates
Doctoral candidates can also take advantage of existing exchange places in their discipline with Erasmus+ partner universities, provided specific requirements are met:
- You must be enrolled at the University of Freiburg.
- Mobilities are primarily possible with partner universities in Erasmus+ programme countries. You may also be able to take advantage of agreements within the framework of Erasmus+ Worldwide (International Credit Mobility).
- There must be an exchange agreement with the respective university. You can find out which agreements are in place for individual degree programmes at the University of Freiburg by contacting the Erasmus+ departmental coordinator.
- For short-term stays (5-30 days), it is usually necessary to conclude a supplement to an existing agreement with the partner university in advance. You should allow about 6 months of lead time for the Erasmus + departmental coordinator, the International Office and the host university to clarify this. Short-term stays include Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP), block seminars, summer schools, workshops and similar formats for doctoral candidates.
- For long-term stays (2-12 months) or semester mobilities, you must generally adhere to the application procedures and deadlines of the respective degree programme. You will be expected to attend courses and earn ECTS credits. On the following page, you’ll find further information on long-term stays.
Erasmus+ staff mobility (STA/STT) for doctoral candidates
Doctoral candidates can also take part in a staff exchange, provided they have an employment contract with the university during this period. Specific mobility formats over a period of 2-14 days are provided for academic staff (STA) as well as administrative and technical staff (STT).
If you wish to teach at a partner university abroad, a contractual agreement with the partner university is required. You can find out which agreements are in place for individual degree programmes at the University of Freiburg by contacting the Erasmus+ departmental coordinator.
