Erasmus+ Staff Exchange for teaching staff (STA)

The Erasmus programme can fund stays abroad for teaching staff. With Erasmus+, the European Union makes it possible to establish and maintain university cooperation. Personal exchanges form the core of such cooperation.

How does Erasmus mobility benefit teaching staff?

Exchanges with other higher education systems benefit teachers in many ways. When Freiburg teachers stay at partner universities or when guest lecturers from abroad come to Freiburg, networks are strengthened, which in turn bolsters teaching in Freiburg.

Teaching mobility is available to those with a teaching contract at the University of Freiburg:

  • professors (including emeriti)
  • academic staff members
  • staff members with teaching duties as well as lecturers
  • doctoral candidates employed by the University of Freiburg

A stay generally lasts from one to no more than two weeks. At least eight hours of teaching per week are expected. Shorter stays of two days or more are also possible, although a minimum of eight hours of teaching is still required in this case. The minimum number of teaching hours is calculated pro rata for each day of the stay exceeding one week (seven days).

Teachers can additionally take advantage of exchange opportunities for university staff by participating in a staff training week or in language courses. They can also take part in work shadowing or collaborate with partner universities to help develop curricula. Erasmus funding includes both a travel allowance and daily allowances that are determined in accordance with the destination country. Where appropriate, further funding is available for people with special needs or for green travel.

What do I need to participate in Erasmus teaching mobility?

An exchange agreement between the University of Freiburg and the host institution forms the basis of Erasmus teaching mobility. For more information, contact the International Office or your Erasmus departmental coordinator. If you are planning a mobility measure, please start by contacting the International Office (see below). We can advise you and check to see if your proposal is eligible for funding. The next step involves your Erasmus departmental coordinator, who must support your mobility. Together with the host institution, you will discuss the teaching programme, record it in the Mobility Agreement and submit the form to the International Office. In addition, you must send a business travel authorisation form P80 (please download the form from the Intranet) signed by you and your supervisor in the original to the International Office.

Continuing education and training

Erasmus+ can fund participation in staff training weeks and language courses abroad for all staff members of the University of Freiburg. Please contact the International Office before registering to clarify the requirements for participation.
