Study Abroad

While enrolled in a full-time degree program at the University of Freiburg, students have different options to study at another university abroad for one or two semesters, or to take classes both in Freiburg and at another institution in the same semester. An overview of the different opportunities is below.

One particularly important aspect of study abroad is timing: the academic calendar in Germany is different from many other countries in the Northern Hemisphere, and the academic calendar in countries in the Southern Hemisphere is different from the Northern Hemisphere. Studying at a university abroad is determined by its academic calendar, and not by the semester dates at the University of Freiburg.

Exchange programs allow students who are enrolled at the University of Freiburg to study abroad at a partner university for 1 or 2 semesters. Students apply for an exchange at their own university. Learn more about the exchange options here.

If you do not participate in an exchange program, you always have the option to apply to universities individually as an international free moving student.

The University of Freiburg is part of the European Campus, which means you can take classes at any of the other member universities.
