Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP)

Erasmus BIP

Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) make it possible to combine a short mobility phase with a virtual component as part of a course. You can also develop joint short-term programmes with your Erasmus partners in connection with the E-Learning Department’s qualification offers. To implement a BIP, apply for Erasmus+ funding through the International Office.

Programme description

Blended Intensive Programmes, or BIPs, are designed to enable a short period of study or training abroad as part of a jointly offered course. The initiative supports the development of joint short-term programmes that are ideally embedded in the curricula of the cooperating higher education institutions. BIPs can be part of existing university curricula or can be used to supplement these curricula in meaningful ways. They can be established as a new form of instruction or understood as means of broadening existing formats with additional features. A central element of the BIP is the mandatory virtual component, which allows for content-related preparation, support and follow-of the short mobility phase. (DAAD)

There are two ways to participate in a BIP with a teacher and a group of students:

  • To implement a BIP at the University of Freiburg as the coordinating university, apply for Erasmus+ funding through the International Office. Applications may be submitted until 31 January for BIPs that will be carried out in the following winter semester or later. Organizational funds provide financial support for the implementation of the BIP at the University of Freiburg.
  • To participate as a sending university in a BIP at a partner university in an Erasmus+ programme country, apply for funding for the mobility of students and a teacher by 28 February for the following summer semester and by 31 August for the following winter semester.

The announcement is made via the International Office’s calls for applications. Requests made at short notice can only be considered within the limits of the available budget and the time needed for implementation.

It is also possible to develop your own teaching project as part of the edacticLab, the qualification and advising programme for teachers offered by the E-Learning Department. To participate in this programme, which extends over two semesters (design + implementation), please contact the E-Learning Department.

The EPICUR Centre for International Teaching and Learning offers a tool to search for suitable teaching partners. The CoTeachConnector helps teachers within the EPICUR Alliance find partners for teaching collaborations.

Funding

BIP participants and teachers are both eligible for mobility funding within the framework of a BIP, provided that the course is offered jointly and the University of Freiburg is involved as a partner. Depending on the type of BIP, either students or staff may participate. Funding is available through Erasmus+ for mobility to the partner university. Teachers can also receive funding for teaching abroad as part of a BIP. The funding consists of a funding rate per day of stay as well as an allowance for the cost of travel to and from the location.

Funding for participating  students as part of a BIP course

Funding for participating staff as part of a BIP Staff Week

Funding for BIP teaching staff

Students (or staff) are also welcome to participate in BIPs that are held at the University of Freiburg as part of a joint course. No funding is available for this.

Erasmus+ organization funds (OS funds) provide financial support for the implementation of a BIP at the University of Freiburg. Further information on the amount and use of OS funds can be found in the PDF documents “Detailed information” and “Leitfaden für Fachbereiche” linked above.
